Common Orthodontic Mishaps and What to Do Before You Reach the Dentist

Orthodontic treatment is designed to help straighten teeth and improve bite function, but braces and aligners can occasionally create unexpected problems. Loose brackets, poking wires and cracked aligners often happen at the worst possible time, especially during sport, meals or travel.

At Sydney Emergency Dentist, we strive to help patients manage orthodontic emergencies quickly and safely. Knowing what to do at home before your appointment can help reduce discomfort and protect your treatment progress.

Loose Brackets and Bands

Brackets and bands can loosen after eating hard or sticky foods or following accidental trauma to the mouth. A loose bracket may slide along the wire or feel uncomfortable against the inside of the cheek.

If the bracket remains attached to the wire, avoid pulling or twisting it. Orthodontic wax can help reduce irritation until you attend the clinic. Patients should also avoid crunchy foods and chewing gum as these may worsen the damage.

If the bracket completely detaches, keep it in a safe container and bring it to your appointment.

Poking or Broken Wires

One of the most common orthodontic emergencies involves a wire shifting out of place and poking the gums or cheek. This can feel painful and irritating, especially while eating or speaking.

In some cases, patients can gently push the wire back into position using a clean cotton bud or the eraser end of a pencil. Orthodontic wax can also cover the sharp area temporarily.

Do not cut the wire at home unless specifically instructed by a dental professional, as this may create additional complications or swallowing risks.

Cracked or Lost Clear Aligners

Clear aligners may crack if patients grind their teeth, expose them to heat or remove them incorrectly. Lost aligners can also interrupt treatment progress if left unaddressed for too long.

We encourage patients to contact our emergency dental clinic as soon as possible for advice. Depending on the stage of treatment, temporary guidance may include wearing a previous aligner or moving to the next set as instructed by the dentist or orthodontic provider.

Mouth Sores and Orthodontic Irritation

Braces can sometimes rub against soft tissues inside the mouth, particularly after adjustments. Warm saltwater rinses and orthodontic wax may help soothe irritated areas while the mouth adapts.

Persistent pain, swelling or signs of infection should always be assessed by a dental professional promptly.
