Dental First Aid: Immediate Steps to Take in a Dental Emergency

Dental emergencies can happen without warning, like a sudden downpour on a sunny day. At Sydney Emergency Dentist, we help patients in Manly, Neutral Bay, Northbridge, Mosman, Sydney and beyond respond quickly and safely when the unexpected occurs. Knowing the right first steps can help protect your teeth and gums until professional care is available.

Act Fast with Damaged Teeth

A damaged, cracked or knocked-out tooth is fragile, and how you act in the first moments can determine what your dentist can do. Gentle handling of a tooth can help your dentist evaluate options.

Gently rinse the tooth with water without scrubbing, then bring it to our emergency dental clinic.

For a knocked-out tooth, try to place it back in its socket if you can, but don't force it. If this isn't possible, keep it in a container with milk or saline and bring it to your Sydney emergency dentist immediately.

Stop Bleeding with Gentle Pressure

Gums or lips may bleed after trauma. Controlling bleeding is like pressing a patch on a balloon, and gentle, steady pressure helps slow it down. Apply a clean cloth or gauze, keep your head elevated, and avoid aggressive rinsing, which can dislodge forming clots.

If bleeding continues despite pressure, call your Sydney emergency dentist immediately.

Cool It Down to Reduce Swelling and Discomfort

Swelling or discomfort often follows dental trauma. Apply a cold compress to the affected area outside the mouth in 10–15 minute intervals to reduce swelling and soothe tenderness. Avoid placing ice directly on teeth or gums. Pain relievers like paracetamol or ibuprofen may help, but always follow the instructions on the label and avoid taking aspirin if bleeding is present.

If bleeding continues, please call us immediately.

Don't Force It: Handling Objects Stuck Between Teeth

Food or small object stuck between your teeth? Gently floss or rinse with water. Forceful actions can cause more damage. Avoid sharp tools, which may harm enamel or gums. If you cannot remove the object safely, please give us a call.
