When you suffer from tooth pain, you know how it can affect your daily life. You can’t focus at work or school, and you can’t think about anything except making the pain subside. At Sydney Emergency Dentist in Neutral Bay, we understand the importance of helping our patients when they have a toothache, so that’s why we offer emergency dentistry services to alleviate your pain and get you back to living your life.

We know that preventative dental care can help prevent dental issues, so we encourage our patients to visit our dental clinic twice yearly for regular check-ups and dental cleanings. However, sometimes tooth pain can occur even with good oral hygiene, so it’s important to realise what causes tooth pain in the first place.

What Causes Tooth Pain?

Several dental conditions can cause tooth pain, and it’s essential to understand why you might suffer from those conditions so you can do your best to avoid them. If you are experiencing intermittent or constant tooth pain, pain when you bite down, sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures or sensitivity to sweets,  it could be an indication of one of the following dental concerns:

Tooth decay – If you are suffering from tooth decay, it is caused when the bacteria in your mouth feed on the sugars from what you eat and then turn into acids. These acids mix with your saliva to form plaque. Without proper dental hygiene, the acids in the plaque will slowly begin to dissolve your tooth enamel, causing a cavity. Eventually, your cavity will get bad enough to reach the interior of your tooth where the nerves are, causing it to hurt.

Broken tooth – When your tooth is cracked or broken, chewing can cause the interior of your tooth to become irritated, or the crack could expose a nerve or the interior dentin of your tooth, causing tooth pain.

Damaged filling – If you have a filling that has been damaged, you may experience pain or sensitivity in that tooth. A damaged filling is vulnerable to infection and decay because bacteria can easily enter your tooth’s interior.

Abscess tooth – A dental abscess is a pocket of infection that can affect your teeth, gums and jawbone. An abscess can be caused by severe tooth decay, a broken tooth, periodontal disease or an injury to your mouth and can be extremely painful.

Bruxism – Bruxism, or teeth grinding, can cause tooth pain because it puts undue pressure on your jaw and teeth. In addition, if you grind your teeth for too long, it can damage them and cause them to hurt.

Infected gums – Gum disease is an infection of your gum tissue, and the inflammation from gum disease can cause your gums to hurt. If your gums swell enough to press against your teeth, it can cause your teeth to hurt as well.
