What should I do if my child knocks out or breaks a tooth?

Dental injuries can happen during sport, play, accidents or falls. If your child breaks or knocks out a tooth, we encourage you to arrange a dental assessment promptly. The appropriate response depends on whether the affected tooth is a baby tooth or permanent tooth.

If a permanent tooth is knocked out, carefully pick it up by the crown, not the root. Avoid scrubbing or handling the root surface. If the tooth is dirty, gently rinse it with milk or saline if available. Keep the tooth moist in milk or an appropriate tooth-preservation solution and seek dental care promptly. A dental professional can advise you about whether the tooth may be suitable for repositioning.

If a baby tooth is knocked out, please do not attempt to put it back into the socket. Replanting a baby tooth can affect the developing permanent tooth underneath. Instead, we encourage you to arrange an assessment so the dentist can check your child's mouth and surrounding structures.

If your child has heavy bleeding, significant facial swelling, difficulty breathing or swallowing, loss of consciousness or another serious injury, please seek urgent medical attention.
