Bleeding gums can have several causes, including gum inflammation, irritation, trauma, infection or other oral health conditions. Occasional bleeding when brushing or flossing can be associated with gum disease, but heavy, persistent or unexplained bleeding deserves prompt assessment.

While waiting for dental care, avoid repeatedly disturbing the bleeding area. Do not place aspirin directly on your gums, as this can irritate the tissue. If you are experiencing heavy bleeding that will not stop, significant facial swelling, difficulty breathing or swallowing or feel seriously unwell, please seek urgent medical attention.
